What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

TLDs (Top-Level Domains) refer to the suffix at the end of a URL, such as in www.bowhosts.com or www.bowhosts.co.za. In the first example, the TLD is "com," while in the second, "za" represents South Africa’s country code TLD (ccTLD).

TLDs are categorized into several groups:

  • gTLDs (Generic Top-Level Domains), typically three or more letters, as listed by ICANN.
  • ccTLDs (Country Code Top-Level Domains), which are two letters based on the ISO 3166 code, also listed by ICANN.
  • geoTLDs (Geographic Top-Level Domains), linked to specific countries or cultures, as listed by ICANN.
